Statement in Support of the Rule of Law

In observance of Law Day 2025, the Albany County Bar Association (ACBA) released a statement affirming its unwavering commitment to the rule of law as the bedrock of a fair, democratic society.

Law Day, held annually on May 1, provides a national opportunity to reflect on the foundational role of law in American life and to recognize the contributions of the legal profession in upholding the principles of justice, liberty, and equality.

The statement reads:

On this Law Day, the Albany County Bar Association reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the rule of law as the foundation of a just and democratic society. Law Day, celebrated each year on May 1st, is a national moment of reflection — an opportunity to recognize the role that law and the legal profession play in upholding our nation’s core values of justice, liberty, and equality.

As members of the legal profession, we recognize our unique responsibility to protect these values and to uphold the principles of justice, due process, and equal protection under the law. The rule of law ensures that no person — regardless of position or power — is above the law, and that all individuals are entitled to fair and impartial treatment within our legal system. It is through adherence to this principle that public confidence in our institutions is maintained and strengthened.

We are deeply concerned by any actions, rhetoric, or policies that seek to undermine the integrity, independence, or authority of the judiciary, the legal profession, or the constitutional processes that preserve our democracy. Such threats — whether they come from public officials, private actors, or other sources — must be met with a resolute defense of the legal norms and values that define our profession.

The Albany County Bar Association stands with judges, attorneys, and public servants who, often at great personal sacrifice, dedicate themselves to the fair administration of justice. We further emphasize the importance of civics education, informed public discourse, and access to legal services as essential components of a healthy democracy governed by the rule of law.

On this Law Day, we call upon all members of the legal community — and the broader public — to join us in reaffirming our shared responsibility to defend the rule of law, to respect the role of the courts, and to ensure that our legal system remains a bulwark against injustice and the erosion of democratic principles.
